Money on TV

Was anyone up at 2 or 3 am? Were you watching tv? Because I was and I have to say that I have been noticing something lately. Late at night instead of good tv there is, of course, infomercials....annoying at best. But in the last year or so I have noticed that what actually happens is that different versions of the home shopping network take over normal daytime channels.

Ahhh the home shopping network. You never know what they will be selling (with only four minutes left before the item is gone forever never to be sold anywhere again!) It could be clothes - which always puzzled me because I honestly can not buy clothing without trying it on - or electronics, or whatever new make up and skin care line Susan Lucci is sponsoring these days....buy not anymore! No, now there is a new craze that seems to be taking over home shoppers everywhere---Money! That is right. I watched 2 hours of them selling various collections of money before finally falling asleep. (I do have a life-I promise!)

There were these exciting two dollar bills with red marks and blue marks and green marks that had thirteen cent stamps and postmarks on them. It was the wierdest thing....I just want to know who it was back in 1970 who put stamps on uncirculated two dollar bills, took them to the post office to get postmarked, and then kept them in their closet in mint condition for thirty years before turning hundreds of them over to the home shopping network to sell. For $300 dollars you got three of these stamped ones and six two dollar bills with stars on them with a few ones thrown in..........

And dimes! They were selling one pound of some sort of special dimes for $400! Is it just me, or does something not add up here?

Then they kept saying stuff about buying them and putting them in your closet for ten years and never touching them so they won't get scratched and they will be worth something. If I pay $400 for a pound of dimes they had better be worth something now-not ten years from now.

  1. I know what you mean about all the strange stuff that is being sold at these late late (or early, depending on how you look at it..)selling shows...And BTW the Paid Programing is often in a way similar in that they are selling books and courses, etc on how to MAKE money....! Help!
Here from Michele tonight Tracie...and happy to Meet & Greet you!

  2. I have never understood collectible money. Well, I mean...old Roman coins of vast antiquity? Those huge stone wheels they use for money in that place whose name I forget? Maybe. A coin with the statue of liberty on it in garish enamel? Not so much. :)

  5. That durn Becky was supposed to go to my blog. Bad ole Becky.

Michele sent me to see you, Tracie (but not Becky!)

Ever since the 1970s the collectibles arena has been very unpredictable. Too many fad collectibles that are worth money for a while--then nobody wants them. Too easy to lose money on things like that. If I'm going to srew away money, I prefer to do it on the stock market when at least I enjoy the process. :-)

BTW, a way to avoid tho informercial shows is to always tape shows during primetime so you have something to watch when you can't sleep, Tracie.

  6. I think that these "sellers" hope that at this time of nite you will be way too wiped out to pay attetion to the fact you do not need a set of 75 bowls/lids at the low,low price of $19.95...call now and receive a second set at no extra charge....

  7. nothing beats a good 2am infomercial.... I saw a similar one episode where they were selling $1000 worth of certified authentic baseball cards for $200. Seems to me that if a collectible sells for $200, it is worth $200.

  8. I think I once watched one of the shopping channels for about 10 minutes. That was enough to cure me and I have never turned them on since then.

  9. Awesome blog template. I may have to copy it.

Are these infomercials regional? I haven't seen any of the ones selling money.

    Via Michele's.

  10. My son received a bicentennial quarter and was just awestruck by it and put it in with his coin collection. I felt so old, because I was 10 when they came out and I had totally forgotten what a big deal they were. I'm here from Michele's today!

  11. My Dad sold his coin collection for me to go to college! To the best of my knowledge, he never "bought" any of the coins - he was a teacher and in charge of the lunch money, and we would help him find the rare coins when he counted on Friday nights. Happy memory! Here from Michele's. And thanks for stopping by!

  13. That does it: I'm cancelling my cable subscription. I'm sick of paying for programming that seems to get worse with each passing year.

Thanks for the much-needed dose of reality. I'm so glad I popped over from Michele's.
