QOTD: It's Alarming

I had lots of time to think about alarms this morning when I was lying in bed trying to decide if I should actually get up. The correct answer to that question was yes, but I didn't choose that, and the sleeping in was wondrous.

My alarm is actually a kitchen timer, because someone (Thomas) killed my old alarm clock. It looked like an alarm clock and required winding to keep accurate time. I loved it.

The kitchen timer is fine, except it doesn't have a snooze button, so I have to reset it each time I want an extra five minutes. I had to reset my old alarm clock as well, but it was quiet - the kitchen timer makes beeping noises for each minute I set. Those 20 sharp beeps that filled the room at 5am this morning did not make Thomas happy. I look at it is a consequence for breaking my old alarm, and don't feel bad at all.

I keep my alarm across the room. More than once I have tripped over things in the dark, trying to reach my alarm while I was mostly asleep. Closed-eye obstacle course: how I add interest to my morning. If I can turn the alarm off from bed, I will immediately roll over and fall back asleep, so I have to keep it on the other side of the room. I have thought about getting one of those alarms that rolls around on the floor, but I think an alarm that actively tries to move away from me would be in danger of being thrown into a wall once I finally catch up with it.

If alarm clock positioning says something about you as a person, mine probably indicates I am lazy. Or that I should go to bed earlier at night.

Tell me about your alarm.
  1. Do you use a traditional alarm clock, an alarm on your cell phone, or is it something else that wakes you up in the morning?
  2. Do you keep your alarm on the beside table, across the room, or somewhere else?
  3. Does it have a buzzer, or wake you up with the radio or music?
  4. Do you hit the snooze button, or are you up and out of bed as soon as it rings?
  5. Do you have any other interesting alarm clock information?

  1. I use my kid! Or my iPhone. Not so interesting. When I was in high school, I had a talking horoscope alarm clock shaped like a sun! She'd go off with a series of high-pitched beeps, and then I'd have to hit her (why am I calling it her? It had a face!) and she'd give me my horoscope.
For years after high school, I'd still get the shivers hearing that sound. I eventually got rid of it. I had to wake up at 5:20 in high school because I lived on a mountain and the bus had a strict schedule.
Oh boy. I don't miss it.

  3. My husband is my alarm - he always wakes up first. But the general alarm always goes off at 7:30 to get the kids up. It starts with light, then adds the radio.

  4. My husband and kids are my alarm. The only time I ever set an alarm is when I have to catch a plane in the morning! My kids alarms are blaringly loud...you can't miss them and my husband gets up at the crack of dawn to work out!

  5. My kid.
    He's a jerk.
    Kidding.
I'm actually tuned to get up at the same time every day, even when my son sleeps in. I'm my husband's alarm clock because he usually gets out of bed (our clock is across the room) turns the alarm off and goes back to bed. The whole purpose of having it way over there is to prevent sleeping in. Men
