Cheaper Than Therapy??

Was anyone watching Nightline last night??

They had this story about this bar in New York where they have "Cringe Night". Adults get up, in public, and read their teenage diaries out loud. Scary!! They say it can be better than therapy, but I am not so sure that I wouldn't need some therapy afterwards if I tried that.

It made me think about blogging.......it is sort of like a diary....only public. Of course I am not quite as out there and open on my blog as I was back in my teenage diary years. (and aren't you thankful for that!!) And there is still something very annonymous about blogging that just isn't there when you stand up in person at a microphone reading it for anyone to hear. (and certainly different from being the person they showed on Nightline doing it!)

I did start thinking about my old diaries....what exactly was written in them. I almost feel inspired to pull them out and share some old entries with you all. Almost!

What do you think? Would you do it on your blog? Would you do it in person?

  1. Hey!

I see you're a blogger chick, too! I am also a blogger chick, well one in training anyway.

I have had trouble with the code for the past two days. A fellow blogging chick has tried to help me out, but we can't get it right. I want the drop down thing like you have.:(

  2. Right now, I wouldn't read out loud my current diary. But maybe in a future I would, because it would be in the past. It would be different, the feelings wouldn't be the same.

Actually I read my diary every now and then, and I like the way I can remember everything and sometimes even laugh about it, or finally understand it.

In my blog...I don't know, maybe just some parts that I like or that I think are important for me.

  3. I read my teenage diary about seven years ago. Then I burned it and all the rest without even opening them. What a selfish, self involved prig I was. But you were probably a nice teenager.

  4. Oh, mine would be lame. It was my younger high school days.

Now the letters dh and I sent each other when we were dating... that is a whole nother story. (it was before the days of email and IM and we dated long distance almost the whole time!!)

  5. Oh heck no! I mean, I wouldn't read or blog about mine.

I have a big box of passed notes I saved from junior high. Every time I look at them I cringe! I have no idea why I keep them around, because I'd sure hate my kids to read them after I'm gone. ;-)

  6. Not in a million years! I agree with you, I'd need therapy AFTER getting up and reading... good grief. If speaking in public is a one of the top five fears (or something like that) that people have - then, holy cow, in public, speaking, airing your teenage angst has got to be number 1.

  7. Great post - I had no idea they had places like that. Must be like group therapy or something, LOL :)

I tried, unsuccessfully, to keep a diary growing up. I'd have some scattered entries for January and February and then the rest of the year would be blank! I wouldn't write all of what I was really thinking though. And I certainly don't even write as much on my blog as I would in a personal diary. So, to answer your question, no way would I do either. I am just way too reserved and shy for that. :)

  8. I wouldn't do it, neither as a reading nor on a blog. I guess I'd rather write about something OTHER people find interesting, not what was going on in my day years ago.

  9. I came from Great Day! Anyhow, I actually started pulling out diary entries from my early 20s late teens and started posting them on my blog some time ago...All the entries are dated when I wrote them...but I found it interesting to do. I wanted everything in one place. As for standing up and reading them in a bar for "Cringe Night"...I'd probably never do that! Maybe if I was drunk enough, but definitely not while sober.

  10. Thanks for including me on your Blogroll. I put up a link to you on a post that's part of an on-going "linkomania" thing I'm doing. I'll get you on my sidebar links soon, I will. I don't think I'd read my childhood diary, but I am all for silencing shame, sharing secrets, stopping the silence and breaking the cycle, if ya know what I mean. You may think I'm crazy, but I've got an idea to that effect up on my blog right now, as a matter of fact. Check it out. I appreciate all opinions (as long as they're respectful).

  11. I would post mine on my blog... I read my teenage diaries a few years back and they were kinda scary. Boy how things change...

  12. I must say I did not save my teenage diaries. I have a feeling if I had, I might need therapy! No, I would not read it in public. I guess I can see how it might be cathartic talking about certain humiliations or what not, but I prefer not to relive that part of my life. As far as my blog goes, I do use it as cheap therapy on occasion when something is bugging me, but I am not as open as I would like to be.

  13. Nope -- I wouldn't even want to re-read some of those entries, much less put them out there.

  14. I don't have any of my diaries anymore. I tossed them out a few years ago. I'm obsessive about throwing out things I don't use anymore. But I kind of wish I'd ketp them. It's fun to go back and read through them. Mine were all a bunch of "Ooohhh...Robby smiled at me today. I could of just died." But still would be fun to read anyway.

  15. I read about this too. I'm not sure I would go up in person and read them, but I thought about finding something interesting from my diary when I was like 15 and puttin it up there. You know when your in those dry blogging spells! LOL

  16. My real diary that whined about boys, no.

My journal that was basically a blog on paper...yes. I found mind awhile back, wrote about it but have never posted it. I need to do that.
