Mermaids!

Katarina has a new favorite movie! It is so exciting that I have already watched it twice with her and am still loving it........The Little Mermaid! I have been seeing the commercial for a couple of weeks and wanting it. Thomas bought it for me (I mean for Katarina-yeah, for Katarina, because she is the one who watches cartoons, not me!)

This was one of my favorite movies growing up. My parents taped it off the tv for me and I watched that tape at least every other weekend for years. It was back when Disney was a pay channel and every so often they would do those free preview weekends to make kids jealous of their friends who had it all the time. Does anyone remember that? My family would always spend part of the weekend at home watching the free Disney and taping shows. I remember my Little Mermaid had the phone number and info to call and subscribe taking up half the screen for about a third of the movie, and two or three times they did a comercial during the movie where you saw all of these operators (wearing mouse ears) talking to the people who were subscribing. But I still watched it over and over.

It is really nice to watch the movie now without all the interuptions. And to be able to turn on the subtitles, because when I was a kid it always drove me crazy that at the begining of the movie when Triton's daughters are doing the concert that Ariel didn't show up for, they all say their names and I never could understand what they were saying, and when I sang along with it I just had to kind of make up words that sounded close to what they were saying (hey, you know that you love to sing along with the songs in Disney movies just as much as I do!) but with the magic of subtitles now I know. Just thinking about it has that song going through my mind.

  1. Yeah, subtitles are great! When Lord of the Rings came out my daughter was living in Korea. so when the subtitles came up for the Elvish part, they were all in Korean! She watched it again when she came back, though, so she got to find out what really happened :)

  2. Disney movies are wonderful and the Little Mermaid is one of the very best. I love all the songs, and "Under the Sea" is great. I keep subtitles on my TV all the time, but I especially like them in movies, so I don't miss anything.

  4. When Disney announced it was being released from 'the vault' my 14 year old daughter BEGGED me to buy it for her. I was less than thrilled because I honestly thought the Disney animated princesses were behind me. But she still watches Lady and the Tramp and Finding Nemo is her favorite movie, so I'm guessing we'll be adding the Mermaid to our collection. Oh, help me Jebus!

  5. I loved The Little Mermaid so much that when I was younger I bought the piano music to "Under the Sea" and learned how to play it myself.

  7. Hey Tracie. I just came by to thank you for your comment on my phone search post. It's amazing, but a lot of people are voting for Verizon, so I just may stay. Funny about Cingular; only one person said they have it and that their customer service is improving; you must have had them before they improved.

And yes, I love Disney movies. The Little Mermaid really was the start of the Disney renessaince (sp?). I think it is one of my favorites, though Beauty and the Beast is right there with it. My six-year old loves them all and you can bet we'll get our hands on this DVD very soon. As it is, I think I can sing almost every Disney movie song from memory now...

  8. I love The Little Mermaid too. I still have my VHS copy (I was in Junior High or High School at the time), and it still works, but I am wondering if it will still be good in another 7 years when it might get released from the vault again. To buy the DVD or not... who knows. My 2 little ones love the movie so it might be worth it. :)

Just wanted to say 'hi' to another blogging chick!

  10. Our daughter loves the Little Mermaid, too. And I can see why, as it's got all the hallmarks of a classic Disney movie.

I only wish the narrator's voice and tone weren't so sales-y during all the god-awful trailers/sales pitches that they make you sit through on the DVD. Even though we've PAID for the disk, we still can't skip through 'em. What's up with that?

(Sorry, it's late and I'm ranting...going to sleep now!)

  11. Oh gosh, I remember when we didn't get many channels, and when we first got cable. :) I also remember when the pay channels would run the free weekends and we'd tape things like crazy onto VCR tapes. Those were the days before hundreds and thousands of channels.

Sounds like wonderful memories you are creating with your daughter. I bet Little Mermaid will have fond memories for her one day :)
