Thursday Thirteen #4

Thirteen Random Things about Tracie!

  1. The biggest thing on my mind right now - I wish I had a huge bowl of pasta with feta cheese on it.....lots and lots of feta!! And some artichoke hearts on the side. Yum! Okay, the food craving portion of this TT is officially over now.
  2. I realize that I haven't shared much about what I am reading lately, so...........This week I started rereading Forgiving the Dead Man Walking - I read it for the first time a few years ago after hearing an interview with the author, Debbie Morris, and it is a book worth reading again.
  3. Katarina is going to sleep, but I told her that she could watch Cinderella for a little bit, and right now I can hear Thomas trying to explain to her that the mice are mean for trying to trick the cat--she isn't buying it!
  4. I never saw the Disney cartoon version of Cinderella until after I got married and my husband rented it for me. I grew up with the 1965 Rodgers and Hammerstein version with Lesley Ann Warren. The cartoon one is great, but you just can't beat this one.
  5. And of course, being a brunette, I always loved that Cinderella had dark hair when she was played by Lesley Ann Warren. Another fun movie that she is in is The Happiest Millionaire. A classic Disney musical I have loved since my childhood.
  6. What I don't understand about DVDs and it seems to be worse in children's movies-why are there 7 FBI warnings now? And why can't you fast forward through them-at least with a VCR you can fast forward whenever you want, with the DVD they force you to watch all of them (sometimes even in various languages!)
  7. I realized today that I got my 2,000th visitor! I know that some of you have passed 10,000-but for me, 2,000 is pretty exciting!
  8. For all of you who have read here before I am sure that you might have noticed that when I don't use spell check it can be pretty bad. Well, this made me feel much better.
  9. Things that drive me crazy---Baby Powder!! How could baby powder drive you crazy, Tracie? I am so glad that you asked, because I am going to tell you--my husband uses baby powder with his deodorant (don't ask me why-he just does) he also likes to put it on the bed to make the sheets cooler, but that not what bothers me so much. Anyway, since we moved a few months ago, he has been out of it and we have forgotten to buy it, until last week. Now within two days the entire bathroom is covered in baby powder-I mean covered! He left a towel on the floor and when I picked it up the next morning clouds of baby powder billowed out of it. Tonight when I was getting ready for church I put on a black skirt-then I went in the bathroom to brush my teeth-I immediately got covered in baby powder from leaning over the sink to spit out the toothpaste. My daughter asked me to carry her into the bathroom so that her feet wouldn't get dirty! The baby powder has got to go!
  10. Since I told you something that my husband does that drives me crazy, I will tell you something that I do--I refer to YooHoos as chocolate water....because that is what they taste like-not like chocolate milk, but chocolate water, kind of gross actually.
  11. I am thankful that this package didn't accidentally get dropped off at my house!
  12. To be kind to my readers who speak Pig Latin as a first language, I have made it easier to read this blog with this translation. For those who have watched Pirates of the Caribbean too much and now only understand things as said by pirates, you can check in here.
  13. One time when I was in middle school-the transmission in our car broke and it would only go in reverse. My dad drove around in it - in reverse for a whole day before getting it fixed.

DVD Decisions-Part 2!

On my Thursday Thirteen last week I talked about how we need to organize our DVDs better because we have them by genre and we can't decide what goes where.

Mr.Schprock gave me a suggestion in a comment:
"I think it's OK to organize your DVDs by genre. For any that cross over, such as action/thrillers or romantic/comedies, buy duplicates so they can exist in both places. Of course, if you're separating TV shows from movies, and you have a made-for-TV movie that's a horror/action/comedy/drama/whodunit, you'll probably have to buy about 10 copies."

Now there were good points to that idea....very organized in a twisted sort of way, but consider the amount of money I already spend on DVD's buying copies just doesn't seem feasible.

So, I told my husband that I really think we should alphabetize them. It is the only way. Otherwise we would just have to take this advice and start buying copies, because no matter what he says Beyond the Sea is a musical based on a true story and should be put in a place that reflects that!

Well, you aren't going to believe what just happened. My husband just called me and said that he has a great idea that will solve our problem. He wants us to think of our DVD case like it was a map and organize the movies by location. What does that mean? He wants to take the movies that we own that are "southern" (Fried Green Tomatoes, Oh Brother Where Art Thou, Philadelphia Story, etc) and put them in the southern area of the shelf. "Northeastern" movies (School Ties, A Bronx Tale, Sleepers, etc) will go in the northeastern section. "Midwesten" movies (Grapes of Wrath, Twister, etc) will go in the center. Westerns will go in.....you guessed it-the western part.

Now I began to contemplate exactly how this would work and then I thought--wait-what about movies that aren't American.....like Just Married-that whole movie basically takes place in Europe, or French Kiss, or Three Coins in the Fountain--where would those go? (not to mention moveis that are actually from other countries) He said that we would create an "Abroad" section for all of those movies that -well- go abroad.

I think this idea still needs a lot of work.

Baby It's Cold Outside!!

Okay, okay.....I know that it isn't really cold, but a girl can dream, can't she? I found this cute little penguin who is so cold that she is wearing a hat and scarf--this is the kind of cold that I am looking for right now-so cold that penguins are cold.

There are lots of cute penguins
here and you can even vote on a name (*hint-Tracie) or think of one yourself (*hint-Tracie)....you could even nominate my name (*hint-Tracie!)....doesn't she look like a Tracie?

Have you visited Mommy Off the Record today?............she won't be my roomie much longer, so please go show her some love while she is still here!

Thursday Thirteen #3!!

Thirteen Random Things about Tracie

1. The top thing on my mind is.....I am really missing my daughter. I know that she is having a great time vacationing with her grandparents, but I can't wait for her to get home. Come quick Saturday!

2. My husband is usually the voice of reason when we grocery shop.

Example---

Husband: You already put two different flavors of ice cream in the buggy. Do you really need the big box of Little Debbie German Chocolate Rings

Me: Well, ice cream is cold, and sometimes I am not in the mood for something cold. Hence, the Little Debbie's.

Husband: But you got the Milano cookies and they aren't cold.

Me: Yeah, but those are cookies. There's a big difference in texture and flavor.

Husband: And I guess you are going to tell me that the oatmeal cream pies are different too?

Me: Of course. Now if we could just go pick up some Twizzlers.........

3. The other day he went to the grocery store without me, and I guess he thought it would be fun to pretend he was Tracie while he shopped. Along with some other fun items, he brought home something that I hadn't had in years........Pop-Ice. *Yum!* I had forgotten how good those were. And now...I am addicted. That's right my name is Tracie and I am addicted to pop-ice, especially the blue ones. Oh, yeah, and the red ones. And the pink ones are pretty good too. In fact, yesterday, I ate 12. In one day. And now that I have admitted my problem, excuse me while I make a quick trip to the freezer, because there is an orage pop-ice calling my name.

4. Talking about food. Here is something not to read while you are eating......No "cat's pee wine" for me!

5. Did you see this guy on Dr. Phil last week?

Alright already, lady, put the kids in their own room! It's pretty bad when your husband lives in a tent on the roof......I hope that your area isn't prone to strong winds.

6. We rented Failure to Launch and I was surprised at how much I liked it. Of course how can you not like a movie that actually has the line "You have been bitten by a lizard of peace" in it? It is a fun new thing to say......I don't know at what point in my life I will be able to use that quote, but you never know!

7. Vegetable Tracking. I hope that it makes you sleep better tonight to know that this has been taken care of.

8. Have you ever noticed in movies and tv shows how someone will get in a car accident and everyone is waiting in the emergency room and the doctor will come out and say, "the patient is doing well.....he has a concussion and ruptured his spleen. We removed the spleen and he will be fine. You can probably take him home tomorrow"

This led me to believe as a child (and I haven't ever learned anything to make me believe differently) that the spleen must be a useless organ. People everywhere were having it removed with no side effects. So, I was sitting here thinking about that and wondered what exactly does a spleen do, anyway. I looked it up on WebMD and they actually say "the spleen is a useful, but nonessential organ". Well, I guess all of those doctors on General Hospital were right all along--we don't really need a spleen after all!

9. Have you tried that lemon toothpaste? I bought some and have found it to be strangely good....like lemon, and yet minty.

10. If you are in Dublin, be on the lookout for Hoppy, the runaway kangaroo. If you see him, be sure to take pictures!

11. I just wanted to let you know that the orange pop-ice was delicious. So was the green one.

12. I am trying to think of a better way to organize our DVDs. Right now we have this shelf with five shelves and four sections of each shelf. We separated all of the movies by genre and had sections going (comedy, drama, kids, based on a true story, musicals, classics, westerns, etc.) But, some movies go in more than one section.......so I will spend an hour taking new movies that we buy and deciding where to put them (and maybe rearranging a little). Then a couple of days later I will go to watch a movie and will find that my husband has rearranged. We keep going back and forth on this. Maybe I will alphabetize them. Should I mix the tv shows in with the movies or alphabetize them in different sections? Let this be a lesson to you--when you obsessively, compulsively buy movies it may be necessary to also obsessively, compulsively organize them.

13. Whenever I am in a store or shopping mall and I see someone wearing camouflage, I have this overwhelming urge to go bump into them and say "I'm sorry, I couldn't see you standing there"

Pirates!

We went to see
Pirates of the Caribbean 2 last night. It was really good. In fact I would even say that it was maybe better than the first one. The special effects and "costumes" were incredible!

I won't spoil any of you who haven't seen it yet but let me just say this--the ending was--great--but so WRONG!!! That is just what I kept saying....no, no don't just end......there has to be more. It just wasn't right. Although, I am consoled by the fact that there will be a third one and all questions will be answered and story lines tied up-I hope!

After we left the theatre we actually went to Blockbuster and rented movies...yes, it is true-I don't only compulsively buy DVDs, I compulsively rent them too! And talking about buying DVD's I am happy to say that this weekend I bought season 2 of
The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

I'm Home Again

We had a great trip! We left a day early (Tuesday-late afternoon) so our reservations weren't there yet, and there was a long search for a room, but we finally found one a couple of towns back down the road. It was a little scary, and in the morning about two minutes after our wake up call we heard a noise outside the room and suddenly the door opened and some guy who worked at the hotel was just randomly coming into the room...he said that he was there to clean, but come on people at least knock just in case the people are still there at 7am.

On Wednesday we checked into a much
better hotel (you can take the photo tour if you want--we stayed in the room with the king bed and the little couch)......No unannounced people walking into the room the whole time we were there.

We had incredible services all week and the buisness meeting went pretty quickly on Saturday. There was accually a lot of down time and we did a lot of relaxing in the room. Also, there was a lot of people there who we don't get to see alot, so we spent lots of meals eating out and catching up with folks. We loaded all of the sound equipment up on Saturday afternoon (our worship team sang-so we had to bring a ton of stuff) and headed home, unloaded everything at the church and then went home to bed.

Katarina left on her trip with grandparents on Wednesday, and they headed to Atlanta. They got to North Carolina today.....and she is going to be back on Saturday. It was nice having some vacation time-just me and Thomas-but now I am starting to really miss her and want her to come home. But, I am talking to her on the phone every day and I know she is having a blast. They even let her order room service and eat eggs and biscuits in bed. (I won't post a link to a photo tour of their hotel.....I wouldn't want to incite any jealousy!)

Here is a random side note. A few weeks ago I wrote about my experience watching people
selling money on tv. Well, at the hotel we had cable (a good treat for us since we just have rabbit ears hooked up on our tv at home) and we were kind of excited to get back to the hotel and have more than five channels to choose from. We went all the way up and saw what was on each channel to decide what we wanted to watch, it was kind of late on Thursday night and there were some informercials (several channels were selling Bare Minerals the makeup "so pure you can sleep in it"-at least that is what the commercial and web site say) And I even saw one channel with my old friends at the home shopping network selling gold plated dimes. I was begining to think that not having cable wasn't so bad after all. Then I kept on changing the channel and I found out what I have been missing out on during all of these non-cable years........All at the same time I was able to choose from:
3 channels showing people playing
Poker,
1 channel showing people playing
Blackjack,
and 1 channel with people playing
Dominoes........... and Dominoes really was showing on a sports station-which makes me have to ask. When did dominoes become a sport? Anyone?

I'm a Thursday Thirteen Slacker

I have officially missed two weeks of Thursday Thirteen.....I even had a great list started in my head, but just couldn't get to the computer on time. Oh well there is always next Thursday-except-there isn't because I will be out of town.

I am acually pretty excited about going out of town for several reasons. Probably not thirteen, but I am going to share them with you.

This is my "Thursday Kind-of-Thirteen That Doesn't Really Count Becuase it is Almost Friday and I Can't Guarantee That This List Will Have Thirteen Items, Or That It Will Be That Exciting!" (I bet that this new meme name I just invented won't be getting it's own blogroll with hundreds of members any time soon!)
  • Our fourth anniversary is on Tuesday-yeah!! For the past three years we have both known what day our anniversary was right up to the acual day, and then both forgotten it on the day....this year we will remember because we leave the next morning.
  • We are going to our conference's campmeeting starting Wednesday and lasting until Saturday.
  • Our daughter is acually going on her own trip with grandparents to see family in another state. Her first trip without us and she will be gone 10 days!!! *insert picture of terrified mother and father here* Just thinking about it makes me want to call the whole thing off, but I know that she will have fun.
  • Since she isn't coming with us and we are going to go stay in a hotel for four days it will almost be like an anniversary trip (with a few meetings and services thrown in)
  • That is nice for us because although we had three weddings, we never had a honeymoon.
  • Yes, I said three weddings!! but that is a LONG story for another post...just trust me, there were three.
  • I have thought that the three wedding could have something to do with the forgetting of the anniversary every year-the thing is that we always joke and say that we will celebrate on the 2nd or 3rd wedding's anniversary, but we definitely forget those dates.

So, there it is-I hope it was exciting. I won't be blogging much next week, but maybe I will take some pictures to make up for it..........yes, that would include one with my new hair--I will post it eventually, I promise. I would have done it tonight, but I haven't taken one yet.

Just for fun--Talking about anniversary's, check out what Carmi wrote about his, it's very sweet. Also, see the interesting things that PantryGirl's parents told her while she was growing up.

Weather Pixie and Red Hair

I have seen those little, cute weather pixie's on several people's blogs recently, and because it isn't fair for you all to have one and me to not have one - I got one of my own. She's down there at the bottom on the left side.

Why did Tracie tell me this?
You want to ask--I know you do.

Well, I told you this just so that I can tell you that if you look closely, you will notice that she has red hair, and that is becuase I dyed my hair this week. Accually I let my mother-in-law dye it, but that is beside the point. The color is "Dark Mahogany Crushed Garnet"......which translates to dark red/brown (with an emphasis on red!). Maybe I will post a pic of my new hair color soon, but until then you can look at my weather pixie and imagine!
