The Power Of Words

I haven't been reading  blogs as much as I did in the past. I used to average 90 posts a day - and I know I haven't even glanced at 90 posts in the last two months. On Friday night I opened my reader, and ran through it, opening up thirty-five random posts to read. And I realized why I haven't been reading.

The words. So many words. Beautiful words. I cried through more than one post. I cheered through a couple. I laughed. At least one made me want to throw things. It was an emotional ride.

I couldn't even begin to link to all the great and interesting and heartbreaking and beautiful things I read (especially in five minutes).

The emotions. I've been hiding from them. Some days it is too hard to deal with my own emotions, much less the new ones brought up from other people's words. But I needed it. I needed to sit in a quiet room and open up my heart to all those words. It was cleansing, and healing, and thought provoking, and so many other things.

A lot of people said something like this about writing, "There's nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and open a vein."

Sometimes reading is a little like that in some ways - the power of words.

This was five minute stream of consciousness writing with my friend, Jana.

  1. 90 posts a day is a LOT. I'm a devoted blog reader, but I don't think I could read 90 in a day.

I understand about the power of words. There is a kind of therapy in writing.

  2. I am so behind on my Google Reader! I should do the same as you and just pick some random ones to read through.

It is amazing to me all the time how words can have such an impact on us. They can draw us into a story so much that we feel as though we are there, they can touch us to the point of crying over something far far away.

    Amazing!

    Stopping through from SOC

  3. I need to do this meme. Working has put a damper on my reading but I have my favorites I read every time they post. I do the same thing, exactly. It is helping me grieve and remember and laugh. Something I have been avoiding since my mom died.

  5. I know that feeling! Just going through blogs, seeing snippets of so many people's lives. A few posts can take you from feeling somber to angry to peeing your pants in laughter.

  7. And then there are days when I want to spank people, or slap them, when they suggest vein opening. PAH on you, jerk! (I am in that mood today!)

I am grateful I found you through SOCSunday... and I am such a word lover I know I'll come back to my normal sometime soon. Hopefully before school starts!!!

  8. There are more real life reasons to miss a good post than there are good posts to read. Good to hear you are reading more of them. I enjoyed your honesty in this post.
