Saying Goodbye To Google Reader

I put it off as long as I could, but I finally broke up with Google Reader this week. I guess we could say it was a mutual thing. Google Reader is breaking up with everyone on July 1st.

Are you prepared for the demise of Google Reader? Have you picked out your new feedreader, or the new system you will use to keep up with all your favorite blogs? (To keep up with me?)

Feedly - After trying most of alternatives, I have decided to go with Feedly. Feedly feels a lot like Google Reader. It not only allows you to organize your blog subscriptions into folders, it will also bring over your existing folders when you import your information from Google Reader. I have several hundred rss subscriptions that were all organized in folders, so this was a HUGE selling point for me. Feedly also makes sharing posts on social media easy from within the reader.

BlogLovin' - A lot of people are moving to BlogLovin'. The people who like it, LOVE it. If BlogLovin' is your new reader of choice, you can follow From Tracie over there by clicking on this button.

A Few Other Readers - If Feedly and BlogLovin' aren't speaking to you, you might want to check out some of these options: The Old Reader was built when Google Reader originally shut down its social sharing functions, it looks and feels like the Google Reader of yore (pre-Google+). Newsvibe is very simple, with no app or social sharing integrations built in. Netvibes is a good combination of Google Reader and iGoogle. They have free and paid versions. Digg Reader is something that a lot of people are very excited to try. I can not give you much information about it, because it hasn't been released yet, but it is something to keep in mind to try in the near future.

Email - If email is more your speed, I have got you covered. You can enter your email address in the form below to subscribe to From Tracie.

Social Media - Maybe you are going to click on new blog posts when you see them shared on social media instead of setting up a new feedreader.

I love social media. Today I am going to make it easy for you to find me...

    1. I moved all of my feeds over to Feedly. I am going to start fresh with BlogLovin'. I'm not exactly sure how that will look, I might just follow certain blogs over there...but I am going to use both of them together in some fashion.

  2. I really like Bloglovin, although these days I don't seem to have time to check it!
How did you do this post with all of your connections? This is cool! I want to do something like this!

    1. I know what you mean about not having the time! I need to plan for that better for sure.

To make this post (and I should say that I saw Alison at Writing Wishing do it first http://www.writingwishing.com/) I went to each individual social media network - In Facebook I created a "Like box" (https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like-box/). In Twitter I went into settings and created a widget. In Pinterest I went to "Pin It Button" and scrolled down to make a board widget. I used Statigram for the Instagram one (because Instagram doesn't seem to be very web friendly). And for Google+, I made a badge (https://developers.google.com/+/web/badge/). Hope that helps!

    2. Fantastic! I was wondering the same thing myself. I love it. Lucky for me I'm following you everywhere except Instagram. I have fixed that. :)

  4. I started using Feedly when I first read that Google was retiring its Reader. I like it, and hope I set it up right when Google shuts down.

    1. I had that moment of wondering this week - what if Feedly is just pulling the information from Google Reader, and it all disappears on Monday?

Hopefully that will not happen to either of us!

  5. I gave up on Google Reader when they announced it - I've been with BlogLovin ever since. Had issues at first, but not really love it.
Already got you tucked safely in my list :)

  7. So...I don't really know what you're talking about *ducks* I've never used any sort of reader service. Should I be? What does it do? Maybe you could email me some info? I'd love you forever!!

  9. I have heard about this, but never used the Google Reader. I'm so glad. I'm not good with big change that messes up my bloggy life!! I had a regular old feed reader that was a Chrome plug in, but I've switched to Bloglovin because I can then see my feed on my phone, iPad, or computer. I love it!! --Lisa

    1. I hate big changes, too. This was a little traumatic for me, because I have been using Google Reader since it first came out.

  10. I decided to go with BlogLovin. So far I have found it easy to use. I do miss Google Reader, though!

  11. Can you believe I don't use a reader? Yep. I use the BLoppy BLogger's link thread everyday. That's what I use!

    1. I get that. The BLoppy BLogger's link is always awesome. We have a great group of bloggers over there.

  12. Not sure I ever had a Google reader thingummy - Blogger gives me a list of latest posts of blogs I follow - is that kinda the same? Thanks for sharing your networking stuff - that made it really easy :)

    1. That is pretty much the same - the list is populated by RSS feeds, just like a reader would be. I am not sure how this change will effect that list.

  13. I started using Feedly right after the Google news came out, mostly because I liked the iPhone app, honestly. (I was doing a lot of reading on my phone at the time.) I still like using Feedly, but I'm giving Bloglovin a shot.

    1. There are good things about both of them, for sure. I don't read blogs on a phone, so I am not sure which one of the mobile apps I like better.

    1. Oooh. I would go CRAZY getting all those emails...but, I follow about 600 blogs, which is a much higher number than most people. I'm glad you have found the system that works best for you.

  17. I chose Feedly also, but I can't say I love it. I can't do comments from the mobile app. :-(
